Spelling vs. sound

The official romanization is Jeni. Hangul writes the sound, not the English spelling, so the double N and the “ie” ending disappear: ㅈ+ㅔ = 제 (je) and ㄴ+ㅣ = 니 (ni).

Say it je-ni, two short, even beats. ㅈ is a soft j, ㅔ is the “e” in “bed”, ㄴ is a plain n, and ㅣ is the “ee” in “see”.

ㅔ (e) and ㅐ (ae) sound almost the same in everyday Seoul Korean, so Koreans simply remember which one a name uses. The same 제니 is how Korean writes the English name Jenny too.
