[Seuteurei Kijeu]usually spelled Stray Kids

Spelling vs. sound

The group writes its name with a space, 스트레이 키즈, and the official romanization is Seuteurei Kijeu. Korean has no consonant clusters, so S-T-R becomes 스-트-레, and the final “ds” sound of “kids” becomes 즈 (ㅈ+ㅡ).

Say it seu-teu-re-i-ki-jeu. ㅡ is short, with flat lips, so in quick speech 스트 sounds close to “st”. 레이 together sounds like “ray”, and ㅌ and ㅋ are said with a strong puff of air.

ㅡ is the vowel Hangul uses to carry a lone consonant from English: 스 for s, 트 for t, 즈 for z. You will see the same trick in many loanwords.
