Spelling vs. sound

Written as one word with no space: 한글날. Because ㄹ meets ㄴ, it is said [한글랄], and the official romanization follows the sound: Hangeullal. The alphabet alone is Hangeul in the official romanization; Hangul is the usual English spelling.

Say it han-geul-lal. ㅎ is a soft h, 한 ends in a plain n, and the ㅡ in 글 is short, with flat lips. When ㄹ comes right before ㄴ, the ㄴ turns into an l sound too, so 글날 sounds like “geul-lal”, with one long l.

South Korea celebrates Hangul Day every October 9. It honors the alphabet King Sejong created and shared with the people in 1446, in a book called 훈민정음 (Hunminjeongeum), “the proper sounds to instruct the people”. You will find 날 in other holidays too, like 어린이날 (Children's Day).
